Nokia and Human Race are staging the first ever Nokia Thames Swim between Hampton Court Palace and finishing near Kingston Bridge. The Nokia Thames Swim is a distance of 2.25 miles with safety on the Thames being paramount, swimmers will be set off in waves of 100 at 10 minute intervals and will swim in the direction of the current down one half of the river. There will also be teams of kayakers (supported by Tim Brabants) patrolling the two mile stretch and spotters placed along the banks of the River. Competitors will never be more than 15 metres from the river bank.

‘This is something I’ve always wanted to do’ said Human Race founder, John Lunt, ‘to stage a swim event in a stunning place where you can’t normally swim; together with the support of Hampton Court Palace, the Environmental Agency and Nokia we can offer this amazing opportunity for the first time - in what we expect will become a classic event.’

The Nokia Thames Swim is part of the Nokia Outdoor Series, a selection of events designed to celebrate the great outdoors and enable people to enjoy being active together in some of the UK’s most spectacular locations.

Nokia have teamed up with open water swimmer Keri-Anne Payne (Olympic silver medallist in Beijing) to provide you with expert tips on training for the Nokia Thames Swim from now until race day. Head to nokiaoutdoorseries.co.uk and receive more training tips and advice on open water swimming, plus key information on how to tackle the Nokia Thames Swim route from Keri-Anne Payne's interactive course guide. How do you keep swimming in the right direction? Where is the best position to start? We've identified key points on the course and highlighted tips and useful advice on how to successfully swim 2.25 miles down the River Thames.

For your last minute training out of the water, make sure you download the award–winning Nokia Sports Tracker app from the Ovi Store. Turn your phone into a full-featured GPS sports computer so you can chart your progress, find your strengths and weaknesses, and share with others.

Although the race is not for novice swimmers, it is open to anyone of competent swimming ability aged 18 or over on race day, with wetsuits being compulsory. A bag drop will be available on the day.

RaceLocation

The event will start at Hampton Court Palace with the finish near Kingston Bridge. It's ideal for spectators as they can walk the entire length of the swim along the banks of the picturesque Thames River.

There will be a river boat ferry, provided by Turks, which will operate between both the start and finish. Spectators are welcome to use the ferries to get around. Ferries will also be available to take athletes back to Hampton Court Palace after the race (every 45 mins). Ferries will leave from the finish area. A map showing the location of the Kingston Ferry Terminal and Kingston Parking Locations can be found here.

We highly recommend you park in Kingston (Drapers/Rose Car park £2) and catch the ferry (£3) (7.15 or 7.45am) to Hampton Court Palace, you will also see the swim course in reverse.

Kingston has some great cafes and shops for you to visit post race.

Parking will be very limited at Hampton Court so we recommend you use public transport or park in Kingston.

How to get there:
The start, Hampton Court Palace is located next to the River Thames to the south west of London. For SatNav the postcode is KT8 9AU.

Race for Charity

Globally 884 million people live without safe drinking water and 2.5 billion do not have adequate sanitation. WaterAid is an international charity that fights to change this and enable the world’s poorest people to gain access to safe water and sanitation. Together with improved hygiene, these basic human rights underpin health, education and livelihoods, forming the first essential step in overcoming poverty.  We work with local partners, who understand local issues, and provide them with the skills and support to help communities set up and manage practical and sustainable projects that meet their real needs.

If you would like to raise sponsorship for WaterAid then you can create your own sponsorship page by going to www.justgiving.com/wateraid. You can also contact Jill or Kat for a fundraising pack by calling 020 7793 2232 or emailing events@wateraid.org. Just £15 can enable one person to access safe water, improved hygiene and sanitation so however much you can raise will make a huge difference.
