They’ll need to install a red carpet at Dorney Lake soon. In just one weekend Jenson Button, Gabby Logan and Linda Barker all swam, cycled and ran their way around the most popular triathlon venue in the UK.
Gabby and Linda both took part in the TIMEX WomenOnly on Saturday 4th July on behalf of Breast Cancer Care, whereas Jenson raced in the King Sturge Property Triathlon on Friday, placing a rather impressive 5th overall.
Competing alongside 1500 other ladies in the UK’s biggest women-only triathlon, Gabby took on the 800m swim as part of a relay team and Linda tackled the novice event - both with their supportive families and husbands cheering them on.
But they weren’t the only stars taking part. Over 340 kids turned out for the UK’s only children’s open water triathlon, and for the majority it was their first experience of a lake swim and for some their first event altogether. Later in the day over 1500 women took part in the TIMEX WomenOnly triathlon, many of whom were helping to raise over £50,000 for Breast Cancer Care.
As well as Gabby, Linda and Jenson, over 4300 athletes – and as many spectators – came to Dorney Lake over the weekend, making it the biggest, and most successful weekend the venue has ever seen.
More celeb action next weekend too!
And there’s more celebrity action next weekend at Dorney, with Olympic Gold medallist (10km swim) Maarten Van Der Weijden taking part in the inaugural blueseventy Great Big Open Water Swim on Saturday.
Sunday sees Olympic champion canoeist, Tim Brabants take on the Bananaman triathlon alongside Leukemia Research ambassador Alistair Campbell in the team relay event.
World champion skiers Graham Bell, Ed Drake, Jayme Baggio and Marc Telling are all going head to head in the individual event. And if that wasn’t enough, world record holder and marathon runner, Richard Whitehead will be there to meet the children taking part in the Scootathlon on Sunday morning. It’s going to be another busy weekend at Dorney Lake!
