Saturday 22nd January 2011 saw the third and penultimate event of the ASICS Off Road Race Series, IceMan take place at the army training ground at Frimley, Surrey.
Over 600 athletes took part in the 12km trail run or duathlon in conditions which were cold, damp and grey. Nearly all of the previous winners of this season’s WildMan and MudMan events were competing, ensuring a strong field.
The 12k trail runners were first to set off, followed by another big turnout of canine runners. The 12k trail run was won convincingly by Matthew King (44:51) followed by Jim Thorne (48:02) and Guy Bowles (48:16).
Mathew King commented: “It was a good course and really liked it, however the hills got to me in the second lap but managed to pace it well.”
The top female finishers were Claire Weldon (52:13), Rebecca Hoare (53:54) and Jennifer Heaney (56:03).
For the canine runners, the top finishes were Mark Dunbar (51:37), Sandra Bowers (52:50) and Darren Middleditch (54:26).
The duathlon was hard fought as always with a quality field and saw a new duathlon winner in the series. Colin Dixon (01:44:57) won convincingly, followed by MudMan duathlon winner Jim McConnel (01:50:12) and Sylvain Grade (01:50:35).
Colin was happy with his performance, “The event went well for me. I got a decent lead on the run as I knew they would be chasing me on the bike as it isn’t my strongest event. It could have been a tight finish towards the end but a few of the guys took a wrong turn on the bike. Am looking forward to TuffMan but would say that Jim would be the favourite as he is a strong technical mountain biker but I will be giving it my best.”
Fay Cripps repeated her success that she enjoyed at MudMan, by winning the female category (02:08:55) followed by Kate Robson (02:13:59) and Fiona Morehead-Lane (02:18:12).
In the duathlon relay, Hanson came in first (01:59:31) followed by The Sticky Relics (02:08:02) and 2 Guys and a Beer (02:22:18).
The next and final race in the ASICS Off Road Race Series is TuffMan on 5th February at Pippingford Park Estate, East Sussex. Places are still available, find out more information and register here.
